On Tuesday, October 24th, AFCEA NOVA Women in NOVA (WIN) held their quarterly meeting with over 50 participants in attendance on the subject of “Risk Management.” Our distinguished panel featured:
*Ms. Janet Johnson, Product Manager, Clinical Support Program Management Office, Defense Health Agency)
*Mr. Greg Fritz, Enterprise Architect, Program Executive Office, Enterprise Information Systems
*Mr. Bill Krayer, President, AFCEA NOVA and Director, Program Management Office, ThunderCat Technology
Our moderator, Ms. Amy Anda, Director, Credence Management Solutions LLC, led the discussion before opening the floor for audience questions. The panelists discussed the challenges of Risk Management and shared their perspectives on how best to meet those challenges.
Mr. Fritz gave an overview of the “5x5 Risk Matrix” where risks are categorized by probability of occurring and consequence if they do occur. As a project manager, he said, it is important to work to reduce the probability that risks will occur and mitigate the consequences if they do. Mr. Krayer discussed the significance of developing and actively managing a risk register, which is an important communication tool within the development team and with external stakeholders. Ms. Johnson agreed a risk register is a good tool and it is important to know which risks are within the project’s ability to control and which need to be elevated to leadership. She stated that discussing risks during in-progress reviews with stakeholders can help gain cross-organizational cooperation and stakeholder engagement to mitigate risks.
Following the formal panel, attendees had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the panelists.
